Suzuki Superbike Showdown

The Stage Is Set For The Showdown at Road Atlanta

The script will be rewritten as the drama unfolds during the Suzuki Superbike Showdown presented by Rockstar Aug. 29-31 at Road Atlanta. The ongoing, emotionally charged battle between Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki teammates Ben Spies and Mat Mladin for the AMA Superbike championship could be decided at Road Atlanta.

Rumors about the changing face of motorcycle racing in the United States – due to new ownership of the AMA Superbike Series and the potential of some of the top riders heading to Europe – suggest this might be the final time to see the show as we currently know it.

There is a high likelihood that one of the Suzuki factory riders will again win the AMA Superbike Series presented by Parts Unlimited season’s points title, but all three podium positions in both Superbike races at Road Atlanta should be wide open, full throttle battles among representatives from Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. Spies wears the #1 plate signifying his stature as the two-time defending Superbike champion. Mladin has switched to #6, a not-so-subtle reminder that he has six Superbike titles and more Superbike victories than anyone in history. Mladin has won 11 times at Road Atlanta, including doubleheader sweeps the past two years.

With the doubleheader format – points-paying Superbike races both Saturday and Sunday – the results of Saturday’s race will have an impact on Sunday’s event. Fans will want to be at Road Atlanta for the entire weekend event so as to not miss any of the unfolding drama.

This is the 10th Encore of Superbike racing at Road Atlanta, home of the original doubleheader format. The talent-laden lineup for the Suzuki Superbike Showdown presented by Rockstar includes three previous Superbike winners at Road Atlanta: Aaron Yates, Jamie Hacking and Miguel Duhamel.

The riders will find a “new” Road Atlanta this year. A major off-season project to benefit motorcycle racing has resulted in a dramatically different Alternative Turn 12 along with a new portion of track in the Esses that creates additional potential passing areas, better sight lines and new viewing areas.

Yates was Mladin’s factory teammate when he won at Road Atlanta in 2005. This year, Milledgeville’s Yates is teammates with Gainesville’s Geoff May for the Jordan Suzuki team, the top non-factory team entered. Both are Georgia natives and will have a large “hometown” crowd rooting for them.

Hacking also rode a Suzuki when he won the Superbike race at Road Atlanta in 2001, but today is the leader of the Kawasaki factory team.

Duhamel rode a Ducati to a Superbike victory at Road Atlanta in 1998, and today ranks as #2 on the all-time Superbike victory chart behind Mladin. He rides the #17 Honda and could easily win at Road Atlanta again.

It could be a dramatic curtain closer at Road Atlanta!
