The Stage Is Set For The Showdown at Road Atlanta

The script will be rewritten as the drama unfolds during the Suzuki Superbike Showdown presented by Rockstar Aug. 29-31 at Road Atlanta. The ongoing, emotionally charged battle between Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki teammates Ben Spies and Mat Mladin for the AMA Superbike championship could be decided at Road Atlanta.

Rumors about the changing face of motorcycle racing in the United States – due to new ownership of the AMA Superbike Series and the potential of some of the top riders heading to Europe – suggest this might be the final time to see the show as we currently know it.

There is a high likelihood that one of the Suzuki factory riders will again win the AMA Superbike Series presented by Parts Unlimited season’s points title, but all three podium positions in both Superbike races at Road Atlanta should be wide open, full throttle battles among representatives from Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki. Spies wears the #1 plate signifying his stature as the two-time defending Superbike champion. Mladin has switched to #6, a not-so-subtle reminder that he has six Superbike titles and more Superbike victories than anyone in history. Mladin has won 11 times at Road Atlanta, including doubleheader sweeps the past two years.

With the doubleheader format – points-paying Superbike races both Saturday and Sunday – the results of Saturday’s race will have an impact on Sunday’s event. Fans will want to be at Road Atlanta for the entire weekend event so as to not miss any of the unfolding drama.

This is the 10th Encore of Superbike racing at Road Atlanta, home of the original doubleheader format. The talent-laden lineup for the Suzuki Superbike Showdown presented by Rockstar includes three previous Superbike winners at Road Atlanta: Aaron Yates, Jamie Hacking and Miguel Duhamel.

The riders will find a “new” Road Atlanta this year. A major off-season project to benefit motorcycle racing has resulted in a dramatically different Alternative Turn 12 along with a new portion of track in the Esses that creates additional potential passing areas, better sight lines and new viewing areas.

Yates was Mladin’s factory teammate when he won at Road Atlanta in 2005. This year, Milledgeville’s Yates is teammates with Gainesville’s Geoff May for the Jordan Suzuki team, the top non-factory team entered. Both are Georgia natives and will have a large “hometown” crowd rooting for them.

Hacking also rode a Suzuki when he won the Superbike race at Road Atlanta in 2001, but today is the leader of the Kawasaki factory team.

Duhamel rode a Ducati to a Superbike victory at Road Atlanta in 1998, and today ranks as #2 on the all-time Superbike victory chart behind Mladin. He rides the #17 Honda and could easily win at Road Atlanta again.

It could be a dramatic curtain closer at Road Atlanta!

Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden made a steady start to their German GP weekend at the Sachsenring today, the pair completing the first two practice sessions in fifth and eighth positions.

World Championship leader Pedrosa was fourth this morning but slid off at Turn 12 in the early stages of this afternoon’s session, run in muggy 30-degree heat. The Spaniard was unhurt and his RC212V only suffered minor damage but he had to complete the session on his number two bike and was unable to better his morning time. All being well, he should be able to move forward tomorrow.

Hayden made some useful improvements to his RC212V in today’s second outing and the American believes he can find a good few tenths during tomorrow’s final two sessions.

Subject: Wednesday is Ride To Work Day
Email Forwards: Send to all media, all riders, all motorcycle/scooter dealers, etc. Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day is this Wednesday
Motorcycle and scooter riders’ 17th annual commuting day is Wednesday, July 16th. Participation in the yearly demonstration is estimated to triple the number of riders on the road. Motorcycle and scooter groups and organizations actively encourage riders to commute by cycle on this day. On Ride to Work Day, motorcycle and scooter commuters seek improved employer recognition and support for this form of transportation and increased public and government awareness of the positive value of riding.
Adding more motorcycles and scooters to everyone’s daily commute makes urban parking easier and traffic flow better, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. Studies have also shown that across the same distances, motorcyclists reach their destinations faster than those using automobiles. Many motorcycles and scooters also consume less resources per mile than automobiles. ‘Riding to work on this day is fun and shows the positive value of motorcycling. For many people, riding is a socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of other public benefits,’ stated Andy Goldfine, this year’s event organizer.

Rome, GA - At the inaugural dual round of World Superbike/AMA Superbike races at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, Pirelli entertained fans who helped raise $5,000 for two powerful charities: Racing 2 Save Lives and the Roadracing World Action Fund. Pirelli would like to thank these fans for their support of these two charities.

To support these funds Pirelli sold spectators numerous sporting items such as books, hats and T-shirts, donating 100% of the proceeds to these two well known and proactive funds. Racing 2 Save Lives raises funds for children’s charities while the Roadracing World Action Fund is dedicated to protecting the safety of racers.

Sharon Foxworthy, President of Racing 2 Save Lives, said, “We’re delighted with this unexpected donation from Pirelli and racing fans to our foundation, and our volunteers had a great time working this event with the Pirelli people. Since our fund was created in 2004, this latest donation has pushed our total raised for various children’s charities to over $200,000. This event nicely complements our regular fundraising activities of hosting track days around the country at tracks like Miller Motorsports Park and Virginia International Raceway.” To learn more about attending the July 3 - 6 event at Miller, or the August 11 - 16 event at VIR, please visit: http://www.racing2savelives.org.

Roadracing World Action Fund’s Vice President, Trudy Ulrich, commented, “This fund has served racers since 2001, and this great gift takes our new total of funds raised to over $600,000. The use of soft barriers has saved lives and reduced injuries more than any other option for absorbing impact. Our fund helps educate the public and increase race track safety by purchasing soft barriers and deploying and demonstrating their use at various race tracks throughout the United States, and by providing motorcycle racing safety education at our website. Since the fund was created many tracks and racing organizations have bought soft barriers on their own, significantly increasing racer’s safety throughout America.” To learn more about making racers safer or to make a donation, go to: http://actionfund.roadracingworld.com.
